Ladakh Marathon 2013 - Run Ladakh , Sept. 8th, 2013

About the Ladakh Marathon

The Ladakh Marathon takes place during the Ladakh Festival, a weeklong celebration of sport, culture and tradition in a predominantly Buddhist high mountain desert region that was a central stop on the historic Silk Route between Central Asia and India.
The eco-friendly “green” marathon will encourage the young people of Ladakh to live a healthy lifestyle by taking up running and become more aware of the need to protect a stunningly beautiful but environmentally fragile region.
The event is organized by Leh-based Rimo Expeditions, India’s leading adventure travel company in cooperation with the support of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and Jammu & Kashmir Tourism.

We are proud to announce 8 September 2013 as the date for the second annual Ladakh Marathon.
The announcement was made by Shri Rigzin Spalbar, Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council at an event to celebrate the success of the first inaugural Ladakh Marathon which took place on 9 September 2012.
Race day for the completed event saw almost 1,500 runners take part in events that included a full marathon around the capital of Leh at an altitude of 3524 metres (11,562 feet) and the ultra marathon, the extreme Khardung La Challenge, where runners crossed one of the world’s highest passes 5602 metres (18,380 feet).
“The 2013 Ladakh Marathon will be bigger and better,” said Chewang Motup. “We are already getting enquiries from runners around India who want to participate. Our goal is to become a key stop on the marathon calendar for runners, not just from Leh, but from around India and the world.”

Four challenging routes to choose from

It may be the shortest race but it doesn’t mean the 10 KM run will be easy. Still, this race is expected to have the widest participation among runners both young and older. We expect lots of schoolchildren to participate in this run and know it will involve the most enthusiasm.
The half marathon takes you through the town of Leh and its outskirts and includes a loop that starts at the Petrol Pump and back. If you are not ready for the full marathon why not give this run a shot and then come back next year for the big race. Most people run the half marathon to prepare for the full marathon.
The Ladakh Full Marathon is the world’s highest marathon. It begins and ends in the town of Leh but the route takes you through the outskirts and along the Leh Valley where the road crosses the Indus River several times. If you are a serious long distance runner this is one course you will want under your belt and be talking about for a long time to come.
This is a race for the elite runner who wants to push the limits of endurance. It starts in the scenic Nubra Valley and then goes uphill all the way to the Khardung La along the world’s highest motorable road past summer yak pastures and stunning views of the East Karakoram mountains of Ladakh. The good thing is that once you reach the pass, it’s all downhill from there to Leh.

  2. A message from Ladakh Marathon
    8th August 2013

    Dear Runners

Jullay! Greetings from Ladakh! As we approach Sunday 8th September with just a month to go, we would like to brief you about things you can do and the Ladakh Marathon Team being there to help you.

Please note that online registration for the various races have been extended to 15 August 2013.

Firstly, we do hope that you have planned your arrival into Leh at least 7 to 10 days before the Run. Leh is at an altitude of 3500m and it is imperative that
everyone takes complete rest on the day of arrival and not venture out to the tempting high points surrounding Leh town. Day 02 should be spent with day walks, light short distance jogging to get used to the altitude. From Day 03 you should be feeling good enough to do longer stretches and go higher.

    We are located at:

    Rimo Expeditions
    Hotel Kanglachen Complex
(opposite the Police Station & Chief Medical Officer’s office)
    Karzoo, Leh.

We can organize some excursions for all the participants to the higher altitudes
of Pangong, Tsomoriri, Warila, Khardungla to prepare yourselvesbetter for the
marathon and all are welcome to visit our office to form group tours.

Bibs and T – shirts will be distributed from 2nd Sept at the above address and it will be helpful if you can send your T-shirt size.

Enerzal , the balanced Energy drink with 5 vital electrolytes and recommended by doctors is the official energy drinks sponsor and will be available at different points along the course of the race.

Registered participants will be given 25% discount at all hotels in Leh. Below are also some more partner hotels who have offered even further discounts. You may contact them directly or book through reservations@rimoexpeditions.com

Please start sending us your arrival details into LEH.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ladakh!
